Impersonation Scams
Please be aware that there are companies claiming they are affiliated with NYSSBA and our Annual Convention & Education Expo.
Rest assured, NYSSBA does not sell or provide your company contact information to any company other than those listed below. However, due to the fact that your company information is available through the website, there are some unauthorized contractors that will capture and use this information. These contractors will often use NYSSBA's name or logo to "remind you" that you haven't ordered a specific service, offer to help you find housing or sell you an attendee list.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has enacted a rule banning government and impersonation fraud. This rule allows the FTC to seek monetary relief in federal court from scammers that:
- Use business logos when communicating with consumers
- Spoof business email and web addresses, including lookalikes and misspellings
- Falsely imply business affiliation using terms that are known to be affiliated with a business
The rule was
published in the Federal Register on March 1, 2024, and became final on April 1, 2024.
For more information read press releases from the
Exhibitions & Conferences Alliance,
FTC, a statement from
FTC Chair, and the
rule itself. If you feel that your company has been a victim of an impersonation scam, report it at
www.reportfraud.ftc.gov.
If you receive a solicitation and are unsure about its legitimacy, please forward it to Melina Breig, Expo & Events Coordinator, at
melina.breig@nyssba.org.
